One of the most widely cited ideas is rooted in human evolution. Thousands of years ago, humans mated much like other animals, from behind. Females needed a clear, convenient way to signal that they were ready to mate, and many of those visual cues involved displaying a large, colorful posterior, something still seen in certain primate species today.
At some point humans shifted toward mating face-to-face, and that change reshaped how we choose partners and raise children. In this theory, breasts recalled the shape of the buttocks and encouraged couples to face one another, forming deeper emotional bonds in the process. Stronger bonds made men more likely to stay and help raise offspring, which suggests that, far from the crude stereotype, a woman's breasts may simply have signaled the promise of a more attentive partner.
Theory #2: Big Breasts Signal Health and Fertility
Part of the reasoning comes down to body fat. Fuller breasts and a well-developed posterior suggest adequate fat reserves, which play an important role in a healthy, full-term pregnancy. Men also tend to be drawn to a small waist-to-hip ratio, and in psychological surveys women who combined that ratio with a generous bust line were rated the most attractive of all.
Not Every Man Prefers Big Breasts
Just as some women fixate on breast size, some men fixate on other things entirely, and preferences vary far more than the stereotype suggests.
